12 Years a Slave

This powerful and dramatic film is based on the amazing true story of one man’s fight for survival and freedom. In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery.  Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender) as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity.  In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon’s chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Brad Pitt) forever alters his life.

Damaris produced two videos and a Discussion Guide.

The videos are built around clips from the film and interviews with the stars. The first is designed to stimulate discussion about human nature. The second considers how Solomon did not just want sympathy – he needed someone to take a very simple action on his behalf.

If you need to view either of these videos offline, please email hello@damaris.org and we will provide you with a download.

This Discussion Guide helps people to think about ideas and issues raised by 12 Years a Slave at five different levels: aesthetic, emotional, intellectual, moral, and spiritual. Suitable for use by individuals, families or small groups, these are also ideal for Damaris Film Clubs.
